School Board Student Representatives Application

The purpose of the District is to serve the educational needs of the students who attend the schools. In order for the Board to gain a better understanding of student perceptions, to facilitate communication between the Board and District students, to increase awareness of the democratic process within the District and to improve the opportunity for student participation in the decision-making process, two East High School students and two West High School students shall be selected to serve as non-voting Student Representatives to the School Board. 

Student Representatives are encouraged to attend all regular School Board meetings and participate in all discussions except sessions and items concerning specific personnel matters, employee performance, student discipline hearings, negotiations and grievances, tax levy, consideration of the sale or transfer of property and/or any other matter permitted to be discussed by the School Board in closed executive session under the Public Open Meeting Law. The presiding officer shall have discretion to limit student participation in the interest of the Student Representatives. Public comment may not be directed to the Student Representatives. 

Expectations and responsibilities for the Student Representatives to the School Board are as follows:

  1. Serve as non-voting Student Representatives to the School Board for a term of one school year

  2. Attend only open meetings of the Board

  3. Sit at the Board table, participate freely in discussion, answer questions and request items be placed on the agenda 

  4. Be a junior or senior at the high school and available to begin their term with the start of the school year

  5. Be selected by the School Board through an application process designed by the Board including recommendations and interviews (see attached forms)

  6. Demonstrate consistent attendance at Board Meetings (once per month/per school rep)

  7. Communicate Board actions or discussions of interest to students by submitting informational bulletins to their high school students and staff and through other means as determined in cooperation with school administration

  8. Review relevant materials and be prepared for each meeting

Process for selection of Student Representatives to the School Board:

1. Distribute Board Policy #0141.1, Administrative Guidelines 5860A, and the attached Application and Recommendation forms in July via email. Application packets will also be available for pickup at the Fisher Administration Building, Wauwatosa East High School, and Wauwatosa West High School.

2. Interview Team

         a. Team will consist of a Board member and an administrator

         b. Applications will be received in adherence with the stated deadline

         c. Determination to extend the deadline due to low response will be made by the interview team

         d. All applicants will participate in the interview process. If the number of applicants exceeds the ability to conduct personal interviews with all of them, a paper screening will precede and personal interviews will be based on the paper screening.

3. Selected Student Representatives to the School Board will be initiated at the first School Board meeting in October (Monday, October 13, 2025)
