Cultivate Series The Importance of Recognizing Students with BreakFree Education logo and headshots of three presenters including Dean Heus

As the lead School Administrator for the Vel R. Phillips School, Dean Heus represented our district in a BreakFree Education Cultivate Series conversation around the importance of recognizing students–because when students feel seen, they engage, persist, and grow. Topics included how to ensure all students are acknowledged, encouraged, and supported regularly and consistently, and how to create a culture for students and adults to interact positively.

BreakFree Education partners with juvenile justice agencies across the country, providing the resources, training, and networks they need to make school relevant and meaningful. From moment-to-moment interactions to creating positive recognition certificates for students, Dean shared his team's strategies and perspective in this work alongside his commitment to finding ways to make sure that school is a place of meaning and purpose for students during their time in detention.
