Phase Into Learning: Shift to Virtual 11/23 - 12/4

The Wauwatosa School District will shift all Phase Into Learning students to virtual instruction from Monday, November 23 through Friday, December 4, 2020. Students will follow their hybrid schedule during this time. Phase Into Learning students will return to the hybrid phase on Monday, December 7, 2020.

Tosa Connected and WVA students will continue to learn virtually according to their assigned schedule.

There are two primary reasons for this temporary shift including:

Delivering high-quality instruction. Across the District, we have experienced operational staffing challenges due to quarantines and positive cases of COVID-19 among our teachers. These challenges are magnified by a nationwide substitute teacher shortage. Although our schools have done an outstanding job executing their backup plans and securing classroom coverage when needed, these backup plans are not ideal, long-term solutions for delivering high-quality instruction. In several schools we are one person away from not being able to operate.

It is our goal to make students’ synchronous learning days as impactful as possible. However, this becomes challenging when we must identify individuals to fill in for our staff in quarantine or those who are too ill to teach. Often, backup plans require full-time teachers to provide classroom coverage during their regularly-scheduled prep time, which cuts into that teacher’s ability to effectively plan and deliver instruction in their own classroom. During these virtual days, our staff will be able to focus on delivering the high-quality instruction that our District is known for, and can ensure that students are engaged in deep learning during that time.

Maintaining minimal spread of COVID-19 in our schools. As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, we recognize that individuals may have close contact with family members and friends. Studies show that these interactions are a leading cause of spreading COVID-19. It is our hope that those who choose to connect with others outside their household during the break will use this time after the holiday as an opportunity to self-quarantine, monitor for symptoms and, if necessary, get tested for COVID-19 so we can continue to minimize the spread in our buildings and the lessen impact of quarantines on our operations when we return on December 7, 2020. We believe this time away from in-person instruction will reduce the number of students and staff who need to be quarantined, allowing us to more effectively staff full classrooms and keep our schools operating in the hybrid phase.

We encourage our educational community to use sound judgement over the Thanksgiving holiday. We must all do our part to keep our schools open and reduce the impact of quarantines on our operations.
