In-Person Instruction + Mitigation Levels

The Wauwatosa School District will offer two models of instruction for the 2021-22 school year: in-person learning and virtual instruction via Wauwatosa Virtual Academy (primarily asynchronous instruction).

The Re-Entry Plan contains a leveled approach to in-person instruction and COVID-19 mitigation based on the current COVID-19 infection rate in our community and in our schools. Please see the full Re-Entry Plan for details about each level.

Based on the School Board’s approval of the Re-Entry Plan, effective immediately, masks or other face coverings are required for all individuals inside district buildings. Individuals must also maintain at least three (3) feet of physical distance between themselves and others. Masks are not required outdoors. Because we do not currently have students receiving instruction in our buildings, additional mitigation efforts (ex: hallway travel patterns, large school events, class cohorting, etc.) do not apply at this time.

In the coming days, the Medical Advisory Committee will reconvene to discuss additional metrics for the District’s consideration. Information about that Medical Advisory Committee meeting will be communicated as soon as it is available.

Following the Medical Advisory Committee meeting, District Administration will consider the additional metrics and provide a recommendation to the School Board at the meeting scheduled for Monday, August 23, 2021 at 7 pm. Following this School Board meeting, we will communicate the mitigation level for the start of the 2021-22 school year.

Building principals and/or program leaders will be communicating in the next week or so regarding mitigation processes, beginning of the year activities, as well as building-specific protocols and procedures related to lunch, recess and more.

Virtual Instruction via Wauwatosa Virtual Academy (WVA)

Students who were enrolled in WVA for the 2019-20 school year (prior to the pandemic) will maintain their enrollment in WVA for the 2021-22 school year. All other students will be automatically enrolled in in-person learning.

If you want your student(s) to participate in in-person learning for the 2021-22 school year, you do not need to take any action at this time.

Families who wish to transfer their student(s) into Wauwatosa Virtual Academy must complete an Intradistrict Transfer Form and submit it to the Student Services Office by 11:59 pm on Sunday, August 15, 2021. This will be the only method for changing your student’s model of instruction for the 2021-22 school year, as we will not be accepting model changes via Infinite Campus.

The district is developing a landing page to house relevant information for the 2021-22 school year including the Re-Entry Presentation, Re-Entry Plan, metric dashboard (updated daily), COVID-19 related communications, a form to submit questions, a Frequently Asked Questions document (updated weekly) and more. We will also continue to send updates via email and SMS message as necessary.

Members of the community are also welcome to email the School Board directly to voice their opinion at

Again, thank you for your engagement, understanding and patience as we continue to make decisions that are in the best interest of our educational community.
