About Milwaukee Textile Recycling
Milwaukee Textile Recycling provides textile recycling outlets for area organizations, businesses and municipalities. By collecting used clothing, shoes, and household items for reuse and recycling, Milwaukee Textile Recycling diverts over 2.5 million pounds of waste from area landfills annually. As the dedicated recycling division, Milwaukee Textile Recycling works symbiotically with our parent company, CTC Supplies, Inc. to provide a closed-loop recycling solution for the greater Milwaukee area. Founded in 1980 and family owned and operated, CTC Supplies, Inc. is Milwaukee’s Premier Wiping Rag Supplier, selling recycled wiping cloths nation-wide and extending the life of discarded textiles through re-purposing.
Why recycle clothing, footwear and textiles?
The average American puts 70 pounds of clothing, footwear, or textiles into local landfills or waste-to-energy facilities (waste combustors). As a leading textile recycler in the state, MTR wants the public to know that 95% of all clothing and textile products can be recycled. In addition to reuse, the re-purposing of textile products includes converting them into wiping cloths or re-manufacturing them into products such as home insulation, carpet padding, or sound proofing material. “Only 5 percent of all textile materials are ultimately disposed of as trash because they are either wet or are contaminated with oil, paint, or some other hazardous material.
- 45% (items in wearable condition) are exported and sold as an affordable clothing option in developing countries.
- 30% are cut into industrial wiping cloths and sold into manufacturing facilities nation-wide.
- 20% are ground into fiber for use in carpet padding, insulation, stuffing and a variety of other products.
- 5% is unusable.
