Wauwatosa Elementary Schools Earn Response to Intervention Honors
Several Wauwatosa elementary schools have been recognized for their efforts to expand, refine and implement supports that lead to improved outcomes for students.
Eisenhower, Madison, Roosevelt and Underwood elementary schools each received a Bronze Behavior honor from the Wisconsin RtI Center and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The Bronze Behavior recognition reflects the fact that each school has been effectively implementing the Response to Intervention (RtI) program for at least one year.
RtI features a multi-tiered approach to identifying and supporting students with learning and behavioral needs as early as possible in an effort to improve student outcomes. The process begins with high-quality instruction and universal screening of all children in the general education classroom. Schools then provide interventions for students who may be struggling, giving them access to special education teachers, specialists and other school staff members, as needed.
“We are very pleased that four of our elementary schools have been recognized at the state level for the tremendous progress they have made in conducting interventions for students who may have specific learning or behavioral needs,” said Dr. Phil Ertl, Superintendent of the Wauwatosa School District. “These interventions play a critical role in helping students attain success throughout their academic careers. A big congratulations goes out to the teachers and staff of these schools for earning this recognition.”
Establishing equitable, multi-level systems of support increases consistency of effective instruction, builds staff knowledge and skills to equitably support all learners, leverages data to proactively identify and provide support for students, and creates a positive culture that nurtures relationships with students and their families, and communities. This strong foundation helps learners gain the skills needed to graduate ready for college or a career.
The Wisconsin RtI Center helps schools and districts statewide build capacity for, adopt and implement high-quality practices to increase success for all students. To view schools in Wauwatosa and statewide that have received the recognition, visit https://www.wisconsinrticenter.org/schools/.
