Wauwatosa Students Recognized for Performance on National French Exam
Fourteen Wauwatosa School District students have been recognized by the American Association of Teachers of French for their achievements on Le Grand Concours (or “The Great Contest”), a national French exam.
The students honored include 10 eighth graders from Longfellow Middle School and four high school students from Wauwatosa West.
Eighth grader Elena Cooper won the platinum award for a perfect score, while Claire Foley won the gold. Robert Galbraith and Lucia Meyler both earned the silver award, and Lyndia Kalumbula won the bronze. Henry Neilsen, Alex Gleesing, Olin Andersen, Josh Millmann and Miles Thurs all received honorable mentions for taking the Level One exam.
Sophomores Marissa Hollander and Daisy Lehman received honorable mentions for the Level Four exam, as did sophomore Luke Callahan on Level Five. Senior Rebecca Henzig took the Level Five AP exam and also received an honorable mention.
“We are incredibly proud of our students’ performance on this exam, and we are thrilled that the AATF is giving our young scholars the recognition they have earned through their studies,” said Dr. Demond Means, Superintendent of the Wauwatosa School District. “These awards reflect the excellent world languages program in the Wauwatosa School District and the outstanding educators that guide our students as they expand their language skills.”
Le Grand Concours is an optional competitive test open nationwide to students enrolled in French One through AP. This year’s test was administered entirely online and consisted of approximately 60 questions covering vocabulary, sentence structure and cultural awareness.
The test allows students to measure their progress in French against 40,000 of their peers while receiving recognition for their performance. Participating in the test also allows teachers to see how their students compare to those at other schools, and potentially adjust their curriculum depending on the results of the exam.
