Degrees and Certifications:
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Setzke
Hello! My name is Mary Beth Setzke and I've been a teacher in the Wauwatosa School District since 2004. I started my teaching career as a third grade bilingual (Spanish) teacher with Milwaukee Public Schools in 1989. After three years in Milwaukee, I took a job with the School District of Waukesha where I taught until 2000. I spent 4 years at home with my two young sons until the youngest was in First Grade. Washington Elementary School welcomed me as a first grade teacher in 2004, and my youngest son and I began first grade together. Me as a teacher in TOSA, and Jonathan as a student in New Berlin. Jonathan kept moving up in the grades, but I loved First Grade so much that I decided to stay put. In 2014, I made the move to McKinley Elementary School and am still happily teaching first grade.
I have a passion for teaching reading! In 2011 I finish my coursework as a Reading Specialist, and every day I have the opportunity to put my studies into practice. First grade is a wonderful place to see students' blossom into fluent readers. They are like sponges, soaking up words!
Outside of teaching I enjoy riding my bike, hiking, traveling, and spending time with family. This past summer (2017), my husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary in Ireland with our children. In my profile photo, I am sitting on a boulder overlooking the Irish Sea. It was a very windy day!
Wauwatosa has been a wonderful place to spread my love of learning to my students!
