Transition Services

Starting at the age of 14, all students should have a post-transition plan in place. As a district, we want to ensure that families are connected to the services and resources they need to be successful after their child leaves the District.

Our Transition Services:

  • Assist students in identifying a postsecondary vision for themselves based upon their interests, abilities and personal goals.

  • Assist students in identifying their transition related support needs and systems, and in planning for their transition.

  • Identify and guide students toward appropriate instructional opportunities so they may acquire the skills necessary for post-secondary goals.

  • Provide opportunities for post-high school education and career awareness/exploration.

  • Support students in finding resources for developing appropriate work behaviors and marketable job skills.

  • Facilitate linkages with adult services, vocational training and post-secondary education providers.

  • Build relationships in the community to increase post-secondary opportunities for students with disabilities.

Next Steps

The Wauwatosa School District's Next Steps services support young adults and their unique needs as they transition to community-based services. Next Steps teaches young adults with disabilities the skills they need to sustain the quality of their lives and enable them to continue their lives as participating members of their communities. In Next Steps, young adults will:

  • Practice independent living skills like grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning.

  • Partner with local businesses to provide service to their community.

  • Engage and socialize with one another and continue to enhance their self-advocacy and social skills.
