Homeless Education Program
Homeless Education Program (HEP) is here to help children and youth who are homeless to succeed in school. The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is a national law that was created to make sure that students who are homeless have the same opportunity to be as successful in school as students who are not considered homeless. This includes being able to enroll in the school without delay, even if particular documents are not available. The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act defines homelessness as lacking a “fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.”
There are different definitions of “homelessness” so if you think you might qualify, please talk with any student services staff member in your school building (school social worker or school counselor), or you can contact our district’s Homeless Liaison, Rachel Kumferman (see Contact Information). We try to look at each situation on a case by case basis and can better able make a determination once we have additional information.
Here is some general information to consider:
Children, youth and/or families are considered homeless if they are:
■ Living doubled up with another family due to loss of housing or other hardship
■ Staying in shelters, including domestic abuse shelters
■ Living in locations such as: – Motels – Hotels – Cars – Parks – Abandoned buildings
