The Wauwatosa Alternative Program is designed for junior and senior students from Wauwatosa East and West high schools who become credit deficient.
Students enrolled in this alternative program must be independent, motivated workers and have a drive to graduate with their class. While some of our students need an extra semester to accomplish this, our goal is to provide an individualized program, making up lost credits and fulfilling the regular graduation requirements of Wauwatosa East and West.
Students in this program attend either a morning or an afternoon session for three hours. Homework is not assigned because students are expected to have jobs and work during non-school hours. Credit is given for this work experience, which helps accelerate the rate of earned credit.
The Wauwatosa Alternative Program is not a school. Our students are encouraged to maintain relationships with their home schools. In some instances our students also take classes at their home schools. For example, a student with years of music instruction may continue in the school band or sing with the chorus. Some of our students have remained active in the home school's sports programs as members of their school's teams.
The program is attractive to students who have not taken to the regular high school program and who are looking for an alternative setting. Admissions procedures begin with an application and include a required recommendation for the school counselor and one of the administrators at the home school. An interview is conducted by the alternative program staff to determine suitability of our program for an applying student. We maintain a waiting list of students who believe we can meet their academic needs. Students with serious attendance problems are encouraged to improve their attendance at their home schools so we can be assured they will attend this very popular program.
If you have questions about our program, please feel free to call us. Remember, you student's high school counselor is in the best position to assist you with putting together a four-year high school plan that will end in graduation. Please discuss graduation goals concerns with your student's counselor.
