That Night…
· DO try to remain calm
· DO verbally try to find out what substance he/she has taken, how much, and under what circumstances
· DO call the Poison Center of Wisconsin (1-800-815-8855) with this information
· DO call 911 or take him/her to the hospital emergency room IF he/she is quite ill or passes out. Remember, many drugs including alcohol can be lethal. Check with his/her friends for substance identification.
· DO tell him/her you will talk about this the next day.
· DO send him/her to bed and check frequently during the night.
The Next Day…
· DO have him/her assume responsibility for his/her actions, including clean up.
· DO have a talk with him/her immediately. Be sure your child is not still under the influence.
· DO try to find out the circumstances under which he/she came to use the alcohol/drugs, including the people he/she was with.
· DO let him/her know you do not condone his/her behavior. It is important to remain calm.
· DO follow through on the previously agreed upon consequences.
· DO talk to parents of other young people involved.
· DO support a consistent message from the school and police.
· DO NOT have your discussion with your son/daughter if you are too angry to talk about it without losing your temper. Wait until you can discuss it calmly.
· DO NOT try to hide the incident from other family members.
