IRP REQUIREMENTS
The major requirements for the IRP will help you to attend to factors that are important to formal research papers, and they will help me to examine your work and expedite my comments. You will not incorporate some of these requirements in other assignments or in college papers (such as putting the thesis statement in bold print), so if you wish to make a copy of the paper without the ?minor? requirements for your own file, simply make the changes and print a separate copy. Attend carefully to all the requirements and be sure to stay within the minimum/maximum parameters. Finally, note that these requirements may take you a bit longer than you expect, so don't wait until the last minute to type the IRP. A good rule of thumb is to have all such major papers completed at least two days before the due date.
MAJOR REQUIREMENTS
1. 12-14 pages of text (double-spaced, 12-point type, 1-inch margins)
2. Minimum 8 sources, minimum 4 journals
3. Minimum 15 parenthetical citations
4. Introduce source fully upon first citing (author, article, source); introduce all paraphrasing
5. Abstract on cover
6. Minimum 1 explanatory note
7. IRP must be of at least "B" quality or revision is expected.
MINOR REQUIREMENTS
1. Put the thesis statement in bold print.
2. Put the thesis statement on the first page and within the first three paragraphs.
3. Use both quotations and paraphrases when incorporating research.
4. On the "Works Cited" page in parentheses at the end of each citation, identify the page numbers on which the sources were used. For example, if you used Smith three times (twice on p. 4 and once on p. 6), your citation would read:
Smith. John. The History of War. New York: Harper & Row. 1994. (4, 4, 6).
5. Do not use a source more than four times (you'd rely too heavily on one source).
6. Number only pages of text. (Cover page and Works Cited page(s) are not numbered.)
7. Staple the IRP (you may need an oversize stapler). Don't use paper clips or special plastic cover.
8. Use current journal articles, 2002 to the present, if you are citing current statistical information.
