Community Service Project

CSP: major guidelines and responsibilites

Part of the Challenge Seminar mission is to lay the foundation for each student to use listening, communicating, computing, reading, creating, analyzing, reasoning, critically thinking, self-learning skills and inclinations to care about and relate to his/her near and far neighbors and contribute to the betterment of his/her world through productive and responsible citizenship. The Community Service Project, which will take place second semester, is a means to that end. The community service project is intended to have students give something back to the community as well as to consider the ethical notion of obligation to others. Choose wisely: if you approach this project grudgingly or without sincere consideration about what you find valuable, it will be meaningless.

You may work alone, with a partner, or with a group, up to 4 people per project
1.      Student identifies community need
2.      Student formulates a detailed plan of implementation
3.      Student secures parental permission to engage in this CSP
4.      Student secures teacher’s approval of project: Proposals Due Friday, February 3, 2012 (50 points):
a.       Community need to be addressed
b.      Means of addressing problem
c.       Timeline for implementation
d.      Individual responsibilities outlined
e.       Professionals/Parents offering guidance
f.       School Staff involved with your project
5.      Teacher guides student with periodic consultation
6.      Students review and assess each other’s contributions in group discussions to be held on Thursday, April 9 and Thursday, May 21 (Dates subject to change pending senior picnic/other possible interruptions)
7.      Student(s) completes project by May 23, 2012.
8.      Student writes short paper detailing results of the project and reflecting on the overall value of community service and an individual’s moral obligation to serve. (Everyone writes this paper individually, even if you worked in a group.)
In your CSP paper, you need to accomplish two tasks:
1. describe your community service project(s), and
2. explain what you learned as a result of doing it (them).

The paper is intended to give you an opportunity to reflect upon what you have done. If you really do that, it is not difficult to write. Here is what I am looking for in your paper:

1. A thorough description of your project, especially focusing on your responsibilities and who gained what from your service. Consider all aspects of the project. You or those who received your services may have gained more than what you think at first.
2. Some honest, insightful thoughts about your project and what you learned because of it. This can be positive or negative. Though we go into the project with the best of intentions, sometimes things do not work out. Other times we go in thinking it will be awful and find we learn amazing things about ourselves, our potentials, and others.
3. Your CSP sheet attached to the back, fully completed.

Of course, mechanics and grammar should be flawless. If this reads like something that you accomplished while walking to class, your grade will surely reflect it. Show me some reflection!
